I have had my kettle for less than a week, and I have used it every night. It is nice and sturdy and obviously of great quality. You push the button and the lid opens smoothly. It heats up quickly and is holds a large amount of water for what I want/desire. The light lights up the amount indicator nicely; would be nice of that was lit all the time instead of only when you turn on the kettle, but that is such a small issue given the quality of this kettle. I only had to run one pot of water to boil to get the smell out and every pot since has been perfect. I'm very happy with my purchase!

Bought this kettle in 2006. Like others have said, it gets hot but it is a kettle so no problem. The real problem is it no longer shuts down once the water is boiling. It worked fine for about 6 months and then began to take longer and longer to shut down. At about one year it totally quit shutting down. I have never let it boil dry so I do not know what happens in this situation. Maybe there is a separate "boil dry sensor" which would turn it off in this potentially dangerous situation. It does look nice.

We have had this kettle for 2 years now and use it several times everyday. It is faster than microwave or stove.
I just did a test and it heated 9 cups of water to a rolling boil in 8 minutes.
Have not seen any of the reported issues with odour or leaking.

I just received the Breville SK500XL for Christmas and I have been using it all day. I did not notice any bad taste or odor as reported in other reviews. We have a ceramic cook top stove and have been using a teapot to heat water. This kettle boils the water almost before our cooktop is even hot. I use distilled water or RO purified water so cleaning the pot should never be an issue. The top opens almost to a verical position so access to the inside is excellent. Breville has great tech support from past experience and I highly recommend this Kettle. It looks great in our kitchen.

I purchased The Breville SK500XL Electric Kettle based on the recommendation of a friend. I felt it was an extravagant purchase, but with 4 tea- and cocoa-drinkers in the family, I decided to take the plunge. The Breville is exceptional! The base/heating element stays on the counter and you remove the kettle, which is lightweight and easy to fill. It is NOT loud whilst boiling; but yes, it does continue to heat a few seconds after it has reached boiling point. The pleasant chime, not too loud, lets you know the water is boiling and ready to go. The water level indicator has a pretty blue glow, and the see-through lid is nice and wide to accomodate filling. I truly wish I'd purchased this electric kettle for our family years ago!
